The green economy is opening up unparalleled opportunities for young Africans to create sustainable solutions and drive socio-economic progress. A shining example of this potential was on display at the Renewable Energy Innovation Challenge, co-hosted by Jacob’s Ladder Africa (JLA) and the Consumer Advocacy and Empowerment Foundation (CADEF) in Lagos, Nigeria. This three-week challenge that culminated on the Demo Day on 1st November 2024, exemplified how partnerships and innovation can fuel the continent’s transition to a greener, more resilient future.
Inspiring Innovation for a Greener Future
The challenge marked JLA’s expansion into West Africa and empowered young entrepreneurs to develop climate-friendly business solutions. A diverse group of innovators pitched groundbreaking ideas that have the potential to address some of Africa’s most pressing issues, such as energy shortages and waste management.
Graced by notable leaders including Permanent Secretary of Lagos Office of Environment Services, Gaji Omobolaji Tajudeen, JLA’s Chief Innovation Officer, Karen Chelangat and CADEF’s Executive Director, Prof. Chiso Ndukwe-Okafor, the event highlighted the urgency for innovative solutions.
Recognizing Trailblazing Solutions
Out of 12 impressive finalists, the Hydro Electric Core Generator emerged as the winner. This revolutionary hydroelectric power generator, designed by James Emmanuel Ikenna, offers a sustainable, cost-effective solution to Nigeria’s electricity crisis. The device operates without fuel, recycling water within its system to produce power.
86 million Nigerians lack access to electricity. Emmanuel emphasized its affordability: “The 3kVA model costs about N200,000 to build, making it accessible to low-income households and communities. You only need water, which is recycled within the system.”
Other notable projects included:
- Agroflow; named the Audience Favorite for addressing sustainable agriculture.
- E-Waste2E-Access; secured second place for transforming electronic waste into valuable resources.
- Loopbox; recognized for its innovative waste management system.
Building a Youth-driven Green Economy
JLA’s Chief Innovation Manager, Karen Chelangat, underscored the power of collaboration in driving impactful solutions. “Initiatives like these help Nigeria’s vast youth population harness their potential to solve real-world challenges while creating jobs in renewable energy, waste management, and sustainable food systems,” she said.
Prof. Chiso Ndukwe-Okafor of CADEF echoed these sentiments, highlighting the mentorship opportunities provided during the challenge. “This platform equips young entrepreneurs with the skills and resources to innovate for a sustainable future,” she remarked.
PS Gaji applauded the initiative and urged participants to realize their potential to reshape communities and drive lasting change.
A Call to Action for Africa’s Youth
The collaboration between JLA and CADEF demonstrates the pivotal role that Africa’s young innovators play in building the future they deserve. By leveraging their creativity and determination, they can transform challenges into opportunities, fostering a vibrant green economy.
To all young Africans: the time to act is now. Embrace innovation, collaborate with like-minded peers, and lead the charge toward a sustainable, prosperous Africa. Programmes like these are your gateway to making a lasting impact—don’t just witness the change; be the change.
