Jacobs Ladder Africa

Seizing the golden green opportunity; African entrepreneurs, it is time!

In a world that is grappling with the profound impacts of climate change, the call for sustainable solutions has never been more urgent. The dire consequences of rising temperatures, extreme weather events, and resource depletion underscore the need for decisive and transformative action.

Africa only contributes 3.8% of global emissions, yet is disproportionately affected by climate change. However, for too long, Africa has been considered a climate change victim rather than a vanguard of fresh solutions to address climate change for itself and the world.

For many African nations, agriculture is considered a key component of economic growth, contributing approximately 35% of the continent’s gross domestic product according to the World Bank, and accounts for more than 50% of the population’s livelihoods. With the current change in weather patterns, African farmers are already experiencing the negative impacts of climate change. According to the International Livestock Research Institute, should temperatures in Africa rise above 4°C by the end of the century, it is estimated that Africa’s wet regions will see a 30% increase in rainfall, while dry regions will experience a 20% decrease. These changes, coupled with prolonged periods of drought and flooding, stand to put a further strain on the agricultural output on the continent.

Also take into account this pivotal insight: the United Nations projects an astonishing 60% surge in global food demand by 2050. Adding to the complexity, Africa’s population growth is anticipated to double during this very period, intensifying the call for more sustenance. This pressing issue underscores the imperative need for innovative solutions that ensure food security and fortify our future. Fortunately, Africa, with its unique blend of challenges and resources, is positioned as a crucible of solutions.

The African continent’s vast expanse of arable land, diverse ecosystems, abundance of renewable energy potential and entrepreneurial spirit among its growing population of youth provide a fertile ground for transformative change. With 60% of African youth facing unemployment, the emergence of the green economy presents a viable opportunity for the youth to gain livelihoods. Furthermore, an opportunity for African entrepreneurs, in particular, emerges.

Africa’s entrepreneurs, long regarded as catalysts for societal transformation, are now uniquely positioned to bypass conventional systems, adopt innovation, and craft distinctive localized solutions to counteract climate change while contributing to the transformation of their community. The scope of the green opportunity is limitless and knows no bounds; African entrepreneurs have the chance to offer comprehensive solutions that traverse industry boundaries, encompassing sectors such as renewable energy, sustainable transport, waste management, and more. These multifaceted strategies not only address the pressing demand for climate solutions but also pave the way for job creation and economic growth.

By spearheading green workforce preparation, Jacob’s Ladder Africa is equally on the way to activating 30 million jobs for the youth in the green economy by 2033. At the heart of this movement is greenLabs, an incubation program that serves as a nurturing hub for visionary entrepreneurs, offering mentorship, resources, and a collaborative environment to develop sustainable ventures. Through greenLabs, Jacobs Ladder Africa is empowering a generation of innovators to tackle climate challenges head-on.

Education and training play a critical role in bridging the gap between youth unemployment, the availability of ready and existing talent, the drive for innovation and the know-how in seizing those opportunities. What’s more, education presents new paradigms for thinking by which a new way of life can emerge.

A demand-driven approach to skills development is required in order to help steer entrepreneurs towards the opportunities in the green economy. This also requires an innovative ecosystem to bring together players in government, the private sector, investors and entrepreneurs to provide various levels of collaboration and support for African youth.

The convergence of climate challenges and entrepreneurial ingenuity has birthed the golden green opportunity. Africa’s entrepreneurs are poised to drive change, leverage innovation, and create a lasting impact. The call to action is resounding. Entrepreneurs and funders alike have a pivotal role to play in this transformative journey. By embracing this opportunity, we can catalyze a shift towards a greener, more prosperous future.
