My Experience at the Green Careers Caravan Launch

The next generation of African leaders isn’t coming, for we are already here. We are here to invent, solve problems, become entrepreneurs and take up space in the green economy. On the 24th of September 2025, Kisii University hosted the inaugural launch of the Green Careers Caravan. This was a total turning point that left an imprint on the student body. A flame was re-ignited in us, awakening a sense of purpose in our lives, a change in mindset, perception and re-writing the narrative that there are no employment opportunities in Kenya. The Old Auditorium was fully packed with students keenly paying attention like never before.

From Madam Consolata (Assistant Director, State Department of Higher Education & Research), we learned that green skills are essential in combating climate change, promoting economic growth and maintaining sustainable development. Gloria Kisilu’s (Founder and CEO, The Shaba) entrepreneurial journey left students inspired, having transitioned from a graduate to a CEO! She urged us to identify challenges in our communities and work out solutions that can drive green entrepreneurship. Her journey of building a green enterprise taught us the art of boldness, patience and the ambition to go for what you want. Dr. Jeremiah Rogito (Founder & Executive Director, Agripanda Ltd; Soil Health, Climate & FOLU Specialist, AGRA) challenged us to embrace innovation, technology, and entrepreneurship as pathways to unlock opportunities in the green economy.

From networking with experts across diverse fields, to the thought-provoking podcast session led by JLA’s Co-Founder & CEO, Sellah Bogonko, and an exciting debate, the caravan created an atmosphere that was both intellectually stimulating and full of energy.

One of the highlights was when a first-year student won a brand-new Redmi Note 14, a device that will support her journey in navigating the digital world. A few of usn enrolled in the Elev8 Academy, opening doors to learn green skills and entrepreneurship. Madam Sellah left us with a powerful reminder to know one’s purpose because success is a choice, and not choosing to succeed is also a choice.

We not only got career support but also gained mentors, people who have stepped up and made it in life. People who serve as good examples that the first step begins a journey of a thousand miles. A hope has been restored, a purpose awakened , a vision foreseen and a flame ignited. Personally, an entrepreneurial spirit was inspired and a  fighting spirit activated. An aspiring Waste Management and Recycling expert has been born. Let’s embrace green careers and combat climate change, building a better society for, what you do not change is what you’re choosing.

We have just set the pace, keep the fire burning and spread the word.
