As December begins, Jacob’s Ladder Africa (JLA) stands at the forefront of Africa’s climate and development agenda by hosting the final four thematic pre-convenings of a six-part series, virtually, from December 3rd to 6th, 2024. These discussions represent the last preparatory steps for the Civil Society Organization (CSO)-led ACS@ONE Climate Reflections Conference, scheduled for February 2025. This landmark event will critically evaluate and build upon the outcomes of the Africa Climate Summit (ACS) held in Nairobi in 2023, ensuring progress on commitments and strengthening Africa’s role in the global climate agenda.
Deep Dives into Africa’s Climate Priorities
Each day of the pre-convenings will address a cornerstone of Africa’s green and low-carbon development agenda:
- Natural Capital and Asset Utilization (December 3)
Discussions will explore how to sustainably manage Africa’s rich natural resources, combat biodiversity loss, and promote initiatives such as the Great Blue Wall and Moroni Declaration. Experts will aim to integrate natural capital into national development plans while enhancing community resilience. - Energy Transitions (December 4)
With Africa accounting for just 2% of global renewable energy investments, this session will address policy reforms and regional cooperation to unlock the continent’s renewable energy potential. Goals include achieving 300 GW of renewable capacity by 2030 and advancing clean cooking technologies, with a strong emphasis on gender-responsive energy solutions. - Green Transitions and Industrialization (December 5)
This day will focus on sustainable industrial growth through innovations in green manufacturing and circular economies. Participants will discuss ways to de-risk private investments and align industrial strategies with Africa’s climate goals while generating green jobs and economic opportunities. - Capital and Finance for Climate Action (December 6)
Recognizing finance as the linchpin for achieving climate targets, the final pre-convening will evaluate progress in mobilizing international climate finance commitments and explore innovative mechanisms to scale climate-positive projects. Discussions will also address reforms in the multilateral financial system to meet Africa’s unique needs.
The insights generated will directly shape the February 2025 ACS@ONE Climate Reflections Conference, ensuring that the Nairobi Declaration remains a living and actionable framework.
As the world looks to Africa for leadership in the fight against climate change, JLA’s commitment to fostering dialogue, driving accountability, and catalyzing action is a beacon of hope and progress. Through platforms like the ACS@ONE, Africa is poised to take its rightful place at the center of the global green transition.
